Professor Esther N. Gicheru is the Director, Institute of Co-operative Development (ICD) at the Cooperative University College of Kenya. She is the immediate former Acting Principal of The Co-operative University College of Kenya.. She holds a Ph.D. in Organizational Development and Transformation from Cecu Doctors’ University (Philippines), a Masters in Co-operative Management and Organizational Development from Leicester University (UK), and a Bachelor of Science in Agriculture from the University of Nairobi (Kenya). She has a wealth of experience of over 40 years in the Cooperative sector spanning the Ministry of Co-operative Development and Marketing, where she served in various capacities for 12 years before she moved to the Co-operative College of Kenya. She served as the Principal of the Co-operative College of Kenya for 24 years prior to its elevation to University College in 2011. Professor Gicheru has contributed enormously to the cooperative movement both locally and internationally and especially within the Co-operative education profession, having served as Principal of the Cooperative College of Kenya for a period of 24 years. Prof. Gicheru served the International Co-operative movement as a member of the Global Board of the International Cooperative Alliance (ICA) and held positions of member of the ICA Global Human Resource Committee and served as Chairperson of the same Committee at Regional(Africa) level for over ten years. Professor Gicheru has consulted and carried out research in the field of Co-operatives and published articles in selected peer refereed Journals. As a co-operative, practioner, Professor Gicheru has been member of the Board and Chairperson of one of Kenya’s most successful Savings and Credit Co-operatives (Shirika Sacco) for many years. She has served in various National Boards such as Coffee Board of Kenya, Horticultural Crops Development Authority, and Coffee Research Foundation; and is currently a member of the Board of Directors of Kenya Trade Network Agency. She has been recognized at National and Global level by receiving Head of State Commendation and The Rochdale Pioneers Award respectively.
